On May 5th I wrote about “The New Normal” http://www.thebusinessofme.com/the-business-of-me-blog/the-“new-normal” and how nonprofits need to be more entrepreneurial if they are to make up the funding gap from lost donations and government funding. Today the New York Times ran an article titled “Squeezed Cities Ask Nonprofits for More Money” http://www.nytimes.com/2011/05/12/us/12nonprofits.html?hp.

The article talks about how some cities are asking their large nonprofits who own substantial land to pay money to the municipalities they are located in. I already hear some saying “Nancy they are talking only about very large nonprofits not me”. Yes it’s true that right now - and I emphasize right now. The current issue regards large nonprofits who own large amounts of land. But the question is - what will happen next and who will it affect? The article also points out that Mayor-elect Rahm Emanuel of Chicago wants to start charging water fees to nonprofits which in the past they have not had to pay. Welcome to the "new normal".

This situation is not simply a political issue - cities are broke and they need to look for other sources of revenue – that’s just reality – that’s just “The New Normal”. And that is why nonprofits need to become more entrepreneurial and look for new sources of revenue.

Welcome to “The New Normal”.
