A recent report from the UN says that the US needs to re-examine its policies regarding protection of victims and punishment of perpetrators of domestic violence (http://www.asafeworldforwomen.org/domestic-violence/dv-usa/1115-us-breaching-human-rights-of-domestic-violence-victims.html).

The report cited a women who obtained a restraining order protecting her from her husband. It seems the woman made seven calls in seven hours to the police when her estranged husband kidnapped her three children. The children were murdered by their father. Horrifying!

As I write this I am shaking my head in disbelief because I really want to believe that the country that enacted VAWA (Violence Against Women Act) would be better at dealing with domestic violence.

Every community deals with domestic violence in its own way utilizing the resources they have. Funding constraints at all levels of government is making the job of keeping victims safe much more difficult.

Hopefully the result of this U.N. report will be meaningful dialogue in both the public and private sectors about effective prevention measures, safety measures and life sufficiency measures to deal with domestic violence.

The report made it clear the government, at all levels in the United States needs to reassess their efforts at keeping women safe from domestic violence. For a country that considers itself "advanced" this is really a very embarrassing assessment by the United Nations.
