Many may think that once a woman leaves an abusive relationship and manages to stay out her life is smooth sailing. Well think again; a woman may leave an abusive relationship but the effects of abuse can last for years. That is not just my belief but is also based on article.

According to an article from the Clark County, Indiana Prosecuting Attorney (http://www.clarkprosecutor.org/html/domviol/effects.htm “Battering is the single major cause of injury to women, more significant that auto accidents, rapes, or muggings. In fact, the emotional and psychological abuse inflicted by batterers may be more costly to treat in the short-run than physical injury. Many of the physical injuries sustained by women seem to cause medical difficulties as women grow older. Arthritis, hypertension and heart disease have been identified by battered women as directly caused or aggravated by domestic violence suffered early in their adult lives.”

Health issues are just one aspect of the long term effects of domestic violence the economic fallout can also last for years. The article points out that women can lose their jobs due to absenteeism due to illness, taking time off for court appearances, etc.

As the saying goes “It ain’t over ‘til it’s over” and for survivors of domestic violence it can take years!
