My Inner Bit*h
June 9, 2010When I was in therapy my therapist told me during one session that her job was to make me a “bitch”. When she told me that I cringed and I am cringing now as I write this. I didn’t want to be a bitch. What woman wants to be known as a bitch?
But as I reflect on what she said maybe I should have been one (I have trouble even saying that word) when it came to managing my money. And if I was one maybe I would not have allowed my ex-husband to control every aspect of my life.
In her book “Money, A Memoir” author Liz Perle talk about her “Inner Stewardess” that person inside her who aims to please. That was me. I was that woman who always compromised her own needs to be sure everyone around me was taken care of. Unfortunately my “Inner Stewardess” allowed me to give over my economic and personal power to an abusive man.
“My Inner Stewardess” did not allow me to take charge because prince charming was going to take care of me. Prince Charming never showed up and the lesson I learned was that the "Prince Charming" I was waiting for was me. I was and will always be the person who is responsible for my life whether it is my financial life, my career, choosing my friends or any other aspect of my life.
I found that taking responsibility for my life was very liberating. Making my own decisions was empowering. The best part was I never had to guess where I stood financially because I assumed the responsibility and always knew where I stood.
Viva La Bit*h!
