In yesterday’s post http://www.thebusinessofme.com/the-business-of-me-blog.php I related a conversation I had with a director of a women’s shelter who was thinking of opening a gift shop so her organization could earn money.

Let’s take a look at what it takes to open a physical store:

Location: The store will need to be located where it will get sufficient traffic and attract customers requiring a lease commitment.

Inventory: The store will need to be stocked with inventory. Even if the inventory is donated by your supporters this doesn't mean that people will buy what you are selling. So you are limiting your sales by the type and appeal of the inventory you stock.

Staffing: The store will need to be staffed and as such can only be open a limited number of hours each day.

Those are just a few of the challenges any one faces when opening a store. Now let’s look at an alternative.

Many of us shop online and eCommerce is growing fast. There are a number of online stores we all use to purchase goods or services. There is a way non-profits can use affiliate networks and open an online store. The advantages are:

Location: Easy a link on your webpage.

Inventory: You can sell anything and everything so you are not limited by stocking inventory.

Staffing: No staff required as your customers can shop your store from their computer anytime they want day or night and any day of the week.

An affiliate program is a form of advertising where an affiliate (that would be your organization) advertises goods for sale from an advertiser like www.amazon.com. As an affiliate you earn a commission every time one of your customers buys something. Affiliate programs have been around for years and many affiliates earn substantial streams of revenue. This revenue stream comes with a very limited investment of time or money.

This sounds easy and it is but like any other venture there is work that needs to be done to make it successful. So when thinking about opening a store to earn income think “online”. To learn more about how to put affiliate programs to work for your organization (or just for you if you wish) go to www.linkshare.com and www.cj.com.

As I have said non-profits need to change their thinking about how to earn income and this is just one way. Tomorrow I will talk about another way.
