October was a whirlwind of travel for me across the country to help promote Domestic Violence Awareness Month. One of my stops was Rochester, NY. I was invited to speak at the University of Rochester at their domestic violence conference “Bridging Research to Practice” and during that conference a beautiful thing happened.

During a break a woman came up to me and asked me “Do you remember me?” As I turned and saw her face I did recognize her. She had participated in The Business of Me about six years ago.  She continued to smile and went to her purse to take something out and said “I still have the purple pen you gave us during that program.”

The Business of Me provides the participants with purple pens which signify change and Susan had kept that pen all these years. This beautiful woman was beaming and happy and had clearly moved on from her abusive past.

After we hugged she said to me she came to the conference so she could see me again and thank me. The Business of Me had truly helped her. In fact, she still has the collage she made at that time (The Business of Me requests that the participants to make a collage that represents the “new vision” they have for their life).

Susan did not have to thank me-she was the one who did the work-The Business of Me provided the vehicle for change.

The Business of Me works! Help me spread the word so The Business of Me can help more Susans.
