On July 29th the www.indystar.com ran a story about domestic violence shelters so overcrowded that the shelters have started waiting lists (http://www.indystar.com/article/20110730/LOCAL18/107300333/Demand-forces-some-women-s-shelters-start-waiting-lists?odyssey=mod%7Cnewswell%7Ctext%7CCommunities%7Cp).

I can’t even imagine a woman calling for help and a safe place for her and her children and being told they will put her name on a waiting list. Deplorable!

According to the article “A spike in domestic violence since this spring, combined with cuts in federal funding and a sour economy, has caused the space shortage, domestic violence advocates say.”

While I am shocked and saddened by the dire circumstances these women are facing I am not surprised. I have been talking about the effects the economy is having on non-profits and the increase in the number of domestic violence incidents for quite a while now.

I have continually said this; non-profits need to be more entrepreneurial and find other streams of income if they are to survive. They require this and most important women in need require them to do this. Some of these women might not survive while they wait for space in a shelter.
