Each weekly session of The Business of Me has an inspirational message and on December 14th I talked about the inspirational message for the first session (http://www.thebusinessofme.com/the-business-of-me-blog.php) today I will talk about the inspirational message for the second session.

The inspirational message for week two is “Coming Out Of The Cave”. Women who have endured domestic violence have been prisoners. The abuser has controlled every aspect of their lives and when they do find the courage to leave they face numerous hurdles in their quest to remain free.

They are like the prisoners Plato talks about in “The Allegory of the Cave”. In “The Allegory of the Cave”   prisoners are chained in a cave and are only able to look forward. All they can see is the wall in front of them. Behind them burns a fire. Between the fire and the prisoners is a partition, along which puppeteers perform. The puppeteers hold up puppets that cast shadows on the wall of the cave. The prisoners can’t see the real objects: the puppets that pass behind them. What the prisoners see are shadows. Illusion is the prisoners’ reality. When the prisoners come out of the cave, they are blinded by the light and need time for their eyes to adjust. So, too, they need time to adjust to reality.

Like  the prisoners in the cave these women have been released from their prison and now they have to adjust to their “new reality”.

The work we do in Week 1 gives them tools with which to create a new vision for their lives. However, they may not yet be able to fully focus on their new vision yet.

During this second weeks session we work on helping them to focus on the new reality that they wish to create for their lives.

We begin Week 2 with the exercise of Ridding Ourselves of Negative Self-Talk.  The exercise, which continues throughout the program, helps the participants to “Come out of the Cave” by helping them free themselves of the negative thoughts that block their path to creating a self- sufficient life.

The Business of Me helps women break the cycle of violence and live independent lives!
