According to an article in Business Wire (http://www.marketwatch.com/story/mary-kay-responds-to-national-increase-in-domestic-violence-with-campaign-to-give-hope-give-joy-and-give-dreams-2011-09-15) on average three women are murdered each day by their intimate partner.

The article goes on to say “Domestic violence shelters throughout the United States report the economy continues to significantly affect women -- with domestic violence increasing for the third straight year and government cutbacks decreasing shelters' ability to help survivors.”

This is not a pretty picture and one that is not going to change any time soon. There are no quick fixes to the economy and no one (not even the so-called experts) has a crystal ball to see when there might be some relief. There is one certainty, no matter what happens we are not going to see a return to “the good old days” -the days when non-profits just had to show that they were doing good work to get a check from the government or a donor. The days when non-profits could rely on local, state and federal funds each year are over. I have said this again and again - non-profits need to find new streams of income if they are going to “stay in business”. And yes non-profits are businesses too. The reality is that women’s shelters and organizations are struggling to maintain basic emergency services.  The organizations are great at providing temporary emergency shelter but what can they do once a woman and her children leave shelter? One shelter operator told me “Once a woman leaves shelter maybe we have time to do one follow up”.  Shelters are stretched to the max, their personnel are overworked and many shelters have put women in need on a waiting list to get admitted to shelter when space opens up. These cutbacks are putting lives in danger!

The Business of Me provides a stream of income to shelters and women’s organizations and reduces the cost of workplace violence for employers and gives the women in need the tools they need to stay out of abusive relationships. The Business of Me is a unique solution to this issue – and it works!
